Story Time Again

Dum ditty dum ditty dum dum dum...Gotta love Dr. Seuss!  I literally walk down the street reciting this rhythmic book in my head.  Eliot loves it too and always laughs from beginning to end.  I imagine it will become a great comfort read when he gets older.

A very sweet catalogue of inappropriate pets!  Eliot can't quite lift the flaps yet but he smiles when we do it for him.  It will be fun to watch him learn the story and make predictions about which animal is hidden on the next page.

Soul Mates

Our friend Erika came to visit last week from Toronto with her parents, her fiancé and her son, Daniel, who is 6 days older than Eliot. Needless to say, the babies had a ball and the adults had even more fun watching them!  A big thank-you to the Buechner family from Eliot for the toys and books and from his Mamas for the lovely casserole dish.

Another big day yesterday: Eliot had his first taste of solid food!  I can't imagine that rice cereal tastes like much but he seemed to tolerate it with only slight disquiet.

Story Time Again

The summary on the back page of Where Is the Green Sheep? reads: "The story of many different sheep, and one who appears to be missing."  I couldn't have said it better myself!  As well as teaching about opposites, this book has humour, mystery and sweet, whimsical illustrations.

More Bookish Thoughts...

Pirates. Trash. Fish. Destiny. Maps.  A village, “inhabited by thirty-six people, five thousand sheep and an indeterminate number of dogs.” What Nikolski lacks in plot, it certainly makes up for in uniqueness of theme and setting.  Throughout the novel, the three protagonists remain ignorant of their biological connection but are inexorably linked by nomadism and idiosyncratic obsessions.

Noah, an archaeology student, Joyce, a fish-store clerk and an unnamed used bookstore employee all emerge from far-fetched, dysfunctional childhoods as rootless adults living in Montreal.  Dickner's characters lack depth and develop little; his saving grace is a whimsical, quirky style that ultimately produces a mostly enjoyable read.

A Wonderful Welcome

Through today's meaningful and moving baptism ceremony, Eliot officially became a member of Oak Bay United.  Huge thank-yous to our loving families, to our supportive friends and to Eliot's Godparents, Dawn and Paul.  Your vows and commitment mean more to us than we could ever possibly express.
