Farewell to Summer

One of Great Auntie Angela's babies, Summer, moves to a new foster home today so she and Eliot had their final playdate over the weekend.  They jammed on the piano and guitar, cruised on the riding toys and generally had a ball.  Thanks for showing Eliot such a great time, Summer; we'll all miss you!

There's No Place Like Home

Eliot had fun trying on Mama Kate's ruby slippers this morning.  Thankfully, he couldn't quite click his heels together three times; we didn't want him disappearing off to Kansas!

Back to Baking: 200 Timeless Recipes to Bake, share & Enjoy

As a professional baker, I've waded through my share of dessert cookbooks but rarely have I found one containing such accessible, delicious and fool-proof recipes as does Anna Olson's Back to Baking.

Olson's natural talent and curiosity combined with her culinary education, work in top-rated restaurants, hosting of Food Network shows and authoring of several cookbooks make her the perfect person to write a baking bible. Indeed, she covers many topics including pies and tarts, cakes, custards, holiday desserts and goods for those with dietary concerns (dairy-free, egg-free, low-fat and gluten-free). Some of my already-favourites include kitchen sink muffins, peanut butter Naniamo bars and chocolate cake with caramel frosting. But every end product has the perfect texture, appropriate sweetness and deep hints of citrus, spice and other aromatics.

Despite the book's beautiful photos, Olson said in an interview with The Vancouver Sun, "don't just make a recipe because the photo is attractive. Read the recipe and make sure the process is also attractive to you." To ensure your baking experience goes as smoothly as possible, Olson's book begins with an informative chapter called "Before You Bake," providing tips on measuring accurately, mixing, making baking-pan choices and selecting baking ingredients. In her recipes, she also provides as many visual clues as possible to let you know you're on the right track, such as indicating if the batter should look thin, or if it should be a little lumpy.

For someone just learning to bake, she recommends beginning with a treat thoroughly covered in her book: cookies. "They always turn out and if they are not quite right, it's not a big deal," Olson said. Wise advice from a talented Canadian baker.

Cinder-Eliot

Whether in the sunroom with the O-Mop, out at Marsh Lake or in the play yard with his broom from (Fairy) Godmother Dawn, Eliot certainly finds happiness in sweeping!  Surely this will eventually translate into doing the laundry, washing dishes and making us dinner...

More Bookish Thoughts...

A Visit from the Goon SquadThe cover of "A Visit From The Goon Squad" labels the book "a novel"   and most critics have referred to it as such. However, if you wish to read a novel, look elsewhere because Egan has actually written a collection of linked stories.

But forget categorization; Egan's work displays brash beauty as she delves into the power of shame, an emotion which makes one present in the moment as effectively as does fear or desire. The protagonist, Bennie, a famous music producer, catalogues his shame on the back of a parking ticket. His assistant, Sasha, deals with hers by compulsively shoplifting. The stories also follow the interlocking fates of compelling, tender and humourous characters: Bennie's high school crowd, Sasha's parents, her uncle and her suicidal friend. As well as shame, Egan's themes include immortality, redemption and a longing to master time. She proves a fearless writer and takes risks by employing different points of view and unconventional styles including a 75-page interlude in power point. These edgy techniques range from jarring to brilliant but, overall, they unite to form a well-crafted collection that ventures vitally into new territory.

Nesting Unconventionally

Forget the play yard, the stroller and the crib; relaxing in Whitehorse meant quality time on the grown-up couch and in the dog bed!  The snow fort proved a big hit as well and looks pretty comfy even at 20 below.

Southbound

After an eighteen hour delay, Jean and Eliot finally arrived home from Whitehorse this morning.  They had a wonderful trip and Eliot even got to experience a few "firsts": running around an airport, spending quality time in the cabin loft, helping empty the ashes and...sledding!
